The effects of weightlessness on the human body


From man's arrival on the moon to the present day, images of man reaching the moon delight many people, but the life of an astronaut is not easy at all. Have you ever imagined floating for several days without suffering the action of gravity? Although it may seem amusing, the absence of this invisible force that holds us to the ground causes various transformations in the human organism. Even so, man has great adaptability in space.

The sensation of having the body pushed back and forth inside a spaceship - giving the impression that the aircraft is moving and astronauts are at a standstill - is the first effect they feel when they arrive in an environment without gravity. But why does this occur? In fact, when we are subjected to gravity all the time - as on our planet - we do not even notice the action of this force, because the sensation of being grounded becomes automatic. The body only feels this force when it increases or decreases.

But that is not the only effect. Some astronauts report that they feel their neck veins inflate within minutes of leaving the Earth's atmosphere. Some senses - such as taste and smell - are also altered: astronauts can only taste very spicy foods. Other parts of the body are still affected, such as the lungs. On the earth's surface, oxygen and blood levels in this organ are constant; already in space, these levels change.

On longer trips, astronauts still have to face psychological problems. This is because they are limited in a limited space, isolated from the normal life of the earth and live with a small group of companions, and usually of other nationalities. These changes can provoke anxiety, insomnia, depression, and create stressful situations in the team.

When astronauts return to Earth, new changes occur in their bodies. Although the effects of weightlessness are completely reversible, the body tends to return to normal only a week or two after return. Many astronauts become disoriented and unable to maintain their body balance and weaken bones, which can break more easily.

Many doctors are researching the effects of weightlessness on the human body to improve health care not only for those traveling through space but also for those on Earth. This is because the effects of space travel are similar to some of the consequences of aging. As we can see, an astronaut's life is much more difficult than it seems at first glance.
