It is located to the east of the Northeast region, with the limits of Rio Grande do Norte to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Pernambuco to the south and Ceará to the west.
Regarding the name of the state, there are some theories about its origin. Some claim to be a Tupi-Guarani name that originated in for (river) and a'iba (bad). Others believe it comes from the indigenous name Simabura versicolor, abundant tree in the region. Another version says that it means "Rio that is the arm of the sea" (Paraíba).
The state's economy is based on agriculture (sugar cane, pineapple, cassava, etc.), industry (food, textiles, sugar and alcohol), livestock and tourism.
