Constituent Assembly

State body made up of representatives elected by the citizens to draft and approve a constitution. In some cases, the Constituent Assembly dissolves soon after the Constitution is approved. In others, she is elected not only to draft the constitution, but also to continue to function as a permanent legislative power, divided mostly into the House of Representatives and Senate. In the latter case, it is called the Constituent Congress. The current constitution of Brazil was drafted by a Constituent Congress elected in 1986 and became effective from 1988.
